The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) records that in 2006, India has produced over 10 million vehicles. This yardstick makes it clear that the economy’s fundamentals are buoyant.

I have no quarrel with this. But I do find this economic assessment rather incomplete and simplistic. There are five, at the very minimum, costs that have to be added to the price of the manufacture of each vehicle.

First, there is the cost of building a road.

Second, there is the cost of maintaining roads, the cost of policing on the road, the cost of powering the millions of traffic lights.

Third, the crippling cost of local air pollution and bad health which requires monitoring, control and regulation. Added to this, is evidence that vehicles are key contributors to pollution, which is feeding climate change and will require even bigger costs to be paid.

Fourth, there is the cost of congestion, which every motorist on a busy road imposes on fellow travellers — from delays which cost time to increased fuel consumption which costs money. And fifth, there is the cost of space for parking of the vehicle — at home and at work.

We need to ask why economists, who normally rant about markets, the need for full cost pricing and removal of subsidies, never account for these costs in their calculations of growth. After all, the cold logic of the market, repeatedly cited when it comes to the meagre support given to farmers, should apply here as well. Could it be that our economists are so vertically integrated — with mind and matter — to the market that these distortions fail to catch their attention?

Take roads, for instance. Cities invest in roads, but fight the losing Battle of the Bulge — congestion. These roads occupy space — real estate — and are costly to build and maintain. It would be logical economics of the market that if something expensive is given away free, people will overuse it. Why then should this dictum not be applied to roads?

The issue of who should pay is simple: the user. But what is often not understood is the nature — colour and class — of the “real” user of the public largesse in our economies. While in the western world, the car has replaced the bus or bicycle, in our world, it has only marginalised its space. Therefore, even in a rich city like Delhi, cars and two-wheelers carry less than 20 per cent of the city’s commuting passengers. The rest are transported by buses, bicycles or other means. But the operational fact is that these cars and two-wheelers occupy over 90 per cent of the city’s road space. Therefore, it is evident that the user of the public space and the beneficiary of public largesse — the road, flyover or elevated highway — is the person in the car or two-wheeler.

Cars do not only cost on the road. They also cost when they are parked. The fact is that personal vehicles are parked for roughly 90 per cent of the time and the land they occupy is costly. Cars occupy more space for parking than what we need to work in our office: 23 sq metres to park a car, against 15 sq meters to park a desk. My colleagues have estimated that the one million-odd cars in Delhi would take up roughly 11 per cent of the city’s urban area. Green spaces in the city take up roughly the same.

Ultimately, the issue is not even what it costs. The issue is why we are not computing the costs or estimating its losses.

It is often said that money is the root of all evil, but what the Bible actually says is that "the love of money is the root of all evil". New research published in Science magazine by Kathleen D Vohs and colleagues at the University of Minnesota measured the effect that thinking about money has on our behaviour. They found that although money makes us more self-sufficient, it also makes us more selfish.

Vohs' subjects were first asked to perform a word descrambling task that could be resolved to generate either neutral phrases ("cold is it desk outside" became "it is cold outside") or phrases that would activate the financial centres of their brain ("high a salary desk paying" became "a high-paying salary"). The experimenter then tested the volunteer's self-sufficiency by giving them a puzzle to solve and measuring how long they would go before asking for help. After 20 minutes, 70% of the money-primed subjects continued to labour alone, whereas 60% of the neutral-primed subjects were pleading for help. Thinking about money seems to make us more independent and less likely to call for assistance.

But does it also make us less likely to help others? To test this, the volunteers were given the opportunity of helping another subject who apparently couldn't complete their task. The money-primed subjects were willing to spend only half as much time helping than the neutral-primed subjects. They were also less willing to perform simple helpful tasks. Another researcher entered the room and "accidentally" dropped a box of pencils. The money-primed subjects picked up significantly fewer pencils than their neutral-primed partners. Not surprisingly, this relative unhelpfulness spilled over into financial dealings. As they entered the study, each of the subjects was given $2 in quarters. On leaving they were given the opportunity to contribute some of their money to a "student welfare fund". The neutral-primed volunteers were willing to donate an average of $1.34, while the money-primed subjects gave a miserly 77 cents.

The results echoed earlier work that examined whether students of economics were more self-interested than other students. John Carter and Michael Irons from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, tested student performance in "the ultimate bargaining game". A subject could be either an "allocator" or a "receiver". The allocator was given an amount, say $10, and then had to propose a split whereby he could give either a little (one cent) or a lot ($9.99) to the receiver. The receiver then had the choice of either accepting the division or telling the allocator where he could stuff his banknotes. In this event, neither of the subjects received any money.

Most student allocators proposed a fairly even split, keeping an average $5.44; but students majoring in economics tended to be greedier, proposing to keep an average $6.15. Conversely, when they were on the other side of the table, the economists tended to accept less, as little as $1.70 (compared to $2.44), before throwing their arms up in outrage. It seems that studying money makes you less generous, or perhaps the discipline attracts less generous people who give less and expect less in return.

Jonathan Swift said that "a wise man should have money in his head, but not in his heart", but fictional misers like Scrooge tend to be cold-hearted as well as tight-fisted. To test whether exposure to money causes subjects to become less sociable, Vohs exposed her subjects to a screensaver that portrayed either fish or banknotes floating underwater. The subjects were asked to arrange a pair of chairs, one for themselves and the other for another participant who would soon be joining the study.

The subjects who had been watching the fish placed the chairs a cosy 80 centimetres apart whereas those forced to view the floating money separated their chairs by an antisocial 118 centimetres. Money may make the world go around but it doesn't make new friends. Exposure to money made Vohs' subjects unsociable in several other ways. They tended to prefer working alone and, when asked to complete a questionnaire indicating their preferred social activities, tended to choose relatively unsociable options.

So although money may not be the root of all evil, the love of it does seem to make us more cantankerous. The results would probably not have surprised Dickens, but it may be something we overlook when we emphasise the importance of teaching children the value of money. Regulated pocket money and savings accounts may make our children more self-sufficient, but it may also make them more unsociable and less likely to help others. With the festive season approaching, we should perhaps think twice before we slip a £20 note inside that Christmas card.

The richest 1% of adults in the world own 40% of the planet's wealth, according to the largest study yet of wealth distribution. The report also finds that those in financial services and the internet sectors predominate among the super rich.

Europe, the US and some Asia Pacific nations account for most of the extremely wealthy. More than a third live in the US. Japan accounts for 27% of the total, the UK for 6% and France for 5%.

The UK is also third in terms of per capita wealth. UK residents are found to have on average $127,000 (£64,000) each in assets, with Japanese and American citizens having, respectively, $181,000 and $144,000. All data relate to the year 2000.

The global study - from the World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations - is the first to chart wealth distribution in every country as opposed to just income, for which more comprehensive date is available. It included all the most significant components of household wealth, including financial assets and debts, land, buildings and other tangible property. Together these total $125 trillion globally.

Anthony Shorrocks, director of the research institute at the United Nations University, in New York, led the study. He affirmed that the existence of a nest egg provided an insurance policy that helped people cope with unforeseen events such as ill health or a lost job. Capital allowed people to drag themselves out of poverty, he added. "In some ways, wealth is more important to people in poorer countries than in richer countries." It was more difficult in developing countries to set up a business because it was harder to borrow start-up funds, he said.

His team used detailed data from 38 countries, but had to rely on incomplete information from the rest.

The report found the richest 10% of adults accounted for 85% of the world total of global assets. Half the world's adult population, however, owned barely 1% of global wealth. Near the bottom of the list were India, with per capita wealth of $1,100, and Indonesia with assets per head of $1,400.

Many African nations as well as North Korea and the poorer Asia Pacific nations were places where the worst off lived.

"These levels of inequality are grotesque," said Duncan Green, head of research at Oxfam. "It is impossible to justify such vast wealth when 800 million people go to bed hungry every night. The good news is that redistribution would only have to be relatively small. Such are the vast assets of the rich that giving up a small part of their wealth could transform the lives of millions."

Madsen Pirie, director of the Adam Smith Institute, a free-market thinktank, disagreed that distribution of global wealth was unfair. He said: "The implicit assumption behind this is that there is a supply of wealth in the world and some people have too much of that supply. In fact wealth is a dynamic, it is constantly created. We should not be asking who in the past has created wealth and how can we get it off them." He said that instead the question should be how more and more people could create wealth.

Ruth Lea, director of the Centre for Policy Studies, a thinkthank set up by Margaret Thatcher, said that although she supported the goal of making poverty history she did not think increasing aid to poorer countries was the answer. "It's no use throwing lots of aid at countries that are basically dysfunctional," she said.

The UN report was issued as the Swiss magazine Bilan released a list of the richest Swiss residents. Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of Ikea, topped the list with an estimated fortune of $21bn.

It is a horrifying scenario. The cancer patient is given a new line of treatment with painful injections into the tumor on their tongue. This is repeated the next three or four days. After a week, when the injections have taken effect, they are called for surgery. The unsuspecting patient signs the documents unaware of what is written in it. The doctors remove not only the tongue but also large parts of the jaw. The patients are then discarded while the tumors are sent to the John Hopkins University, USA. This experiment is repeated on 26 more patients. The doctors/hospital calmly make a massive Rs.23 lakhs from the ‘tongue export’. JHU and the company associated with the trials, Erimos Pharmaceuticals, get valuable information for a new drug that could earn them billions.

This is no story from a horror film, but a real-life account of experiments carried out on human guinea pigs in 2001 in the Regional Caner Centre in Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala. The drug was the M4N tested on humans even before being tested on animals. The doctors were the Institute Director, Krishnan Nair and Dr. Manoj Pandey. The patients who were then neglected by the hospital lived agonized lives. Many died. Devassykutty lay paralysed and bed-ridden in a tiny house, with a tongueless mouth. They are now penniless. Saraswathy Amma has constant and unbearable pain. Gopalan developed another cancerous growth very near where earlier one was removed surgically. Gopalan filed a case which was dismissed on flimsy technical grounds. He died one year ater filing his case.

Ironically after these failures and gruesome methods these two doctors were recently awarded a prize worth 1,000 euros for their efforts.

Not only that, in a highly retrogressive judgment on August 5 05 the Supreme Court, in the Dr.Jacob Mathew case, has de facto made filing any case against doctors/hospitals impossible. The judgement categorically lays down that an investigation officer should not proceed against doctor without obtaining an independent and competent medical opinion, preferably from a doctor in government service. In addition the court directed that a private complaint is not to be entertained unless the complainant has produced a credible opinion by another competent doctor to support the charge of negligence.

With such a judgment the ruthless doctors/hospitals can now have a field day fleecing patients and experimenting on them.

This decision has in fact cleared the way for the planned boom in clinical trials in India by imperialist TNCs. India is set to become a massive human laboratory. Earlier, in 2005, the government amended Schedule Y of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act to allow multinationals to conduct clinical trials on their own or in collaboration with local comprador companies. It has also lifted the customs duty on research supplies. Also all procedures for regulatory approvals have been relaxed. In this way the government has facilitated the entry of the TNCs to experiment on Indians. The global clinical market is a huge $10 billion and growing at a fast pace of which India earns $200 million. This is expected to grow to $1.5 billion by 2010.

Not only will Indians be used as guinea pig but the trials will cost a fraction of what they would in the US. Besides, India’s highly skilled medical professionals and sophisticated medical infrastructure makes it an ideal haven for the TNCs. By changing the laws the government has prostrated at the feet of this international drug mafia, led by Pfizer.

With all these changes in the law there has been a veritable influx of foreign companies in this line. In just the year 2005 there has been a gigantic 300% increase in clinical trials in India. Since the change in the laws Contract Research Organisations have mushroomed across the country, providing services, ranging from the translation of consent forms to the identification of people willing to be part of the trial. Pfizer has invested $ 13 million in research in India and it is at present conducting 20 clinical trials in the country. Eli Lilly India has about 17 projects going on in about 40 hospitals across the country and Glaxo has started seven trials recently and plans to shift one third of its trials to backward countries. Companies like Ranbaxy are conducting trials on behalf of MNCs. A US government web site has shown that in India, while in the beginning of the year 2005 US companies were conducting 8/9 trials, by November 2005 the figure had jumped to 50. It is a veritable gold rush!!

It is clear that in this offensive of global capital the imperialists will not leave any sphere for their loot, including the use of Indians bodies for their medical research. The gory details of the effect of such experimentation may never get fully known as these are conducted in total secrecy. Particularly after the Kerala exposures they will make sure that such exposures are not repeated. But through this the international drug mafia (not the hard drugs ones but the so-called legitimate companies) will make gigantic profits, while their ‘Indian’ accomplices will get the crumbs. The courts, including the highest are acting in complete compliance with the drug mafia’s interests. India is set to become the biggest human laboratory in the world.

And in this conspiracy against the Indian people the Indian government has been totally compliant, changing the laws to suit foreign pharma interests. Senior doctors and top hospitals act in collusion. Those who suffer are the people of the country. Today, no patient can be sure while entering a hospital, public or private, whether they will experimented on. Though mostly it will be the poor and uneducated who will be the victims, no one is safe from these predators. The governments policies have to be roundly condemned and opposed. While the Congress/CPM ruling alliance has taken the lead in introducing such policies the other parliamentary parties are totally silent. Only a vast movement of the citizen can effectively counter such horrific policies.

Arriving at the convent, the nun got out, gave him a meaningful glance and went on her way.

On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to retrieve a bible and looked up psalm 129. It said, "Go forth and seek; further up, and you will find glory."

CITY brokers have never enjoyed the best of reputations. The popular image is of a brash and boastful twentysomething with more money than sense or sensitivity.

But now a study by a group of eminent American academics suggests that star performers on the stock market may be even worse and could best be described as “functioning psychopaths”.

In a study of investors’ behaviour, the team from three US universities suggest that people with brain damage can make better financial decisions than the rest of us.

Market traders may feel slighted, but this study comes from the growing field of neuroeconomics, which investigates the mental processes that drive financial decision-making.

The experts found that emotions can make investors play it too safe. They claim the emotionally impaired are more willing to gamble for high stakes.

The US team found that people with certain brain injuries which suppress their emotions could make the best stock market traders. They took a selection of 41 people of normal IQ, 15 of whom had suffered lesions on the areas of the brain that affect emotions, and made them play a simple investment game.

Those with brain damage significantly outperformed those without, the researchers from Stanford Graduate School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Iowa found.

The key was the fear that stopped those with “normal” brains from taking even the most sensible of risks.

Antoine Bechara, an associate Professor of Neurology at Iowa, suggested that successful investors in the stock market might plausibly be called “functional psychopaths”.

These are individuals either much better at controlling their emotions or, perhaps, not experiencing them with the same intensity as others.

Baba Shiv, of Stanford, added chillingly: “Many CEOs (chief executive officers) and many top lawyers might also share this trait.

“Being less emotional can help you in certain situations.”

The study set up a 20-round gambling game, at the start of which participants were given $20. At each round, they were asked if they wanted to risk $1 on the toss of a coin.

If they lost, they lost the coin; if they won, they received $2.50. “From a logical standpoint, the right thing to do was to invest in every round,” Mr Shiv, an associate Professor of Marketing at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.

As the rounds progressed, the “normal” participants passed, becoming cautious and concerned about conserving their winnings. Those with lesions did not, and ended the game with an average of $25.70, almost $3 more than the “normal” group.

The study is relevant, the authors say, to the “equity premium puzzle” that has bemused financial experts.

This is the tendency of large numbers of investors to prefer to invest in bonds rather than equities, even though the latter have historically always provided a much higher rate of return.

When stock markets decline, investors shift to bonds, even though over the long term this is not the best thing to do.

Emotions lead people to avoid risks even when the potential benefits far outweigh the losses, a phenomenon known as myopic loss aversion that scholars have concluded can explain, for example, why people invest in bonds over historically higher-performing stocks.

George Loewenstein, a Professor of Economics at Carnegie Mellon and a co-author of the study, said: “It may be the first study that documents a situation in which people with brain damage make better financial decisions than normal people.”

Mr Shiv said: “Emotions serve an adaptive role in speeding up the decision-making process.

TGVs normally run at a speed of 320kmph and that is not its maximum high speed for this train also holds the world record of being the fastest train on rails running at 515.3kmph which is almost half the speed of light! TGV trainsets with second sections have a total of almost 36,000 horsepower.

The IMF has just confirmed that cows give more milk
when they are milked in a country that have a free market and
freedom (George Bush alone knows what freedom means) .

In a detailed study that spanned 3 years and involved 16 countries
each of which had a different combination of economic and political systems.

Cows that lived in countries that had a free market plutocracy(like the US )
produced on an average 43 % more milk than cows that
lived in socialist/communist countries.

Scientists have discovered that cows that lived in
socialist/communist countries had greater tension in the muscles of
their mammary glands which in turn contracted the
passage ways through which milk had to pass .
This was the main cause for low output.

The main reasons for tension among socialist/communist cows was that

Vandana Shiva takes fight against Monsanto to Hong Kong

Indian environment activist Vandana Shiva and French anti-globalisation crusader Jose Bove Wednesday launched a campaign against US food and seed giant Monsanto on the sidelines of the global trade talks here.

The duo also handed a petition to officials of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to oppose the trade dispute filed by the US, Argentina and Canada under the rules of the multilateral organisation on genetically modified (GM) food.

The petition - which Shiva claimed has been signed by 135,000 citizens from over 100 countries and 740 organisations representing 60 million people - was to be given to WTO Director General Pascal Lamy, who instead sent a representative.

"The petition asks the World Trade Organisation not to undermine the rights of countries like the European Union to take appropriate measures to protect their ecology and environment from GM Food," Shiva said.

The backdrop for the short event were placards and posters that read, "WTO: Hands Off Our Food" and "Monsanto Plunders and Kills Peasants and the Planet".

The organisers - including Friends of Earth International chairperson Meena Raman and Member of the European Parliament Carolina Lucas - also delivered a box of organic food to the WTO official.

Concerned by the food related crisis in the 1990s, EU has regulations to control the GM food industry, which followed a four-year ban on such produce in 1999. The US, however, says it violated the WTO agreement.

"This is not a case of US versus the EU, but clearly Monsanto versus the civil society," Shiva, registered as a representative of non-government organisations, told IANS.

The EU and the US have a discord over a regulation of Brussels on genetically modified food. The US claims the regulation violates the WTO trade agreement, but the EU says free trade is not truly free without informed consent.

"The WTO has become a tool for big companies to patent seeds and even our lives since it allows such measures under the agreement on trade related intellectual property rights," Bove said.

"GM foods make farmers dependent on big companies, threaten food security and take away consumer choice. A ruling that goes in favour of the US will have a major implications," he warned.

Shiva says her next course of action is to launch a satyagraha - the philosophy of non-violent protest adopted by Mahatma Gandhi - in India against Monsanto.

"We have to protect the rights of Indian farmers and consumers."

The first time you heard "Sar Utha Ke Jiyo"slogan probably when you were a
kid your brain formed a unique templete that stored the message along with
the emotions/feelings they generated.(Thats how memory works )
In this case they must have been positive emotions
This is a part of your permanent memory and stored.
And whenever you hear and think of the same slogan again
your templete is retrieved and you experience the same emotions.

What Coco-Cola is doing here is trying to overwrite that template with
the template it has created called "Piyo Sar Utha Ke "
Since the wording/positioning of the templates are so similiar there is a
tendency that you will allow the same emotions that you have for
the original to pass over to the fake template.

The way the advertisements have been positioned using a national hero like
Rajvardhan Singh Rathore ,the music only confirm the above.

They want to turn the act of drinking their red piss which costs less than a rupee to produce into something glorious and something to be proud of.

There was soap. Then came shampoo. Throw in toothpaste and shaving cream to complete the laundry list of toiletries. The world seemed quite fine with these. The ones who used these smelled nice, attracted women (except the ugly ones) and made close friends. The others smelled bad, attracted women (except the poor ones) and made not-so-close friends.

Then FMCG marketeers realized that they couldnt sell any more stuff. There were only so many teeth to brush. They could try making people fat, as soap use grows with surface area, but McDonalds had gotten there first.

So, what do they do? Create bogus products and worse still, fake needs to get people to buy bogus products. Moisturizer came in. As if this wasnt enough, this was segmented by body-part (foot cream, body lotion, face cream). Conditioner got added to (or separated from, I dunno which) shampoo. Soap became face wash. Pre and after shave shit happened. Blades went from 1 to 2 to 3 (dunno if the next one is 4 or 5 - depends on whether the sequence is natural or prime numbers).

Deo was invented for those who are too lazy to bathe. Edible stuff went into cosmetics. Green tea, cucumber, lemon and eggs have never been so expensive. Making fake products is easy. Same shit, new package. How do you create fake needs? Preying on the insecurities of people is the most timeless of marketing strategies. I'm surprised Kotler doesnt mention it (Oops, I forgot! He's a marketeer).

Ads showed losers becoming studs, virgins getting laid, ugly to handsome, fat to thin - and I am still just on shampoo. Wait till I get to moisturizer. And the world has enough suckers for this crap to actually work. Guys, wake up. The only thing that can help ugly people get laid is alcohol. Money helps too, but booze is cheaper. The next time you see someone buying left-testicle-cream-with-aloe-vera or something equally gross, give them one tight slap.

The man on the cover is Shyam who true to his name was as
dark as the night .He falls in love with a fair woman called Gori
in the village of Kalapur.

Shyam and Gori's romance blooms behind

11/25/05 "ICH" -- -- The Indian writer Vandana Shiva has called for an "insurrection of subjugated knowledge." The insurrection is well under way. In trying to make sense of a dangerous world, millions of people are turning away from the traditional sources of news and information and to the World Wide Web, convinced that mainstream journalism is the voice of rampant power. The great scandal of Iraq has accelerated this. In the United States, several senior broadcasters have confessed that had they challenged and exposed the lies told about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, instead of amplifying and justifying them, the invasion might not have happened.

Such honesty has yet to cross the Atlantic. Since it was founded in 1922, the BBC has served to protect every British establishment during war and civil unrest. "We" never traduce and never commit great crimes. So the omission of shocking events in Iraq – the destruction of cities, the slaughter of innocent people, and the farce of a puppet government – is routinely applied. A study by the Cardiff School of Journalism found that 90 per cent of the BBC's references to Saddam Hussein's WMD suggested he possessed them and that "spin from the British and U.S. governments was successful in framing the coverage." The same "spin" has ensured, until now, that the use of banned weapons by the Americans and British in Iraq has been suppressed as news.

An admission by the U.S. State Department on Nov. 10 that its forces had used white phosphorus in Fallujah followed "rumors on the Internet," according to the BBC's Newsnight. There were no rumors. There was first-class investigative work that ought to shame well-paid journalists.

How do McDonald's deliberately exploit children?

NEARLY all McDonald's advertising is aimed at children. Although the Ronald McDonald 'personality' is not as popular as their market researchers expected (probably because it is totally unoriginal), thousands of young children now think of burgers andchips every time they see a clown with orange hair.

THE NORMALITY TRAP

* No parent needs to be told how difficult it is to distract a child from insisting on a certain type of food or treat. Advertisements portraying McDonald's as a happy, circus-like place where burgers and chips are provided for everybody at any hourof the day (and late at night), traps children into thinking they aren't 'normal' if they don't go there too. Appetite, necessity and - above all - money, never enter the "innocent" world of Ronald McDonald.

Few children are slow to spot the gaudy red and yellow standardised frontages in shopping centres and high streets throughout the country. McDonald's knows exactly what kind of pressure this puts on people looking after children. It's hard not to give in to this 'convenient' way of keeping children 'happy', even if you haven't got much money and you try to avoid junk-food.

TOY FOOD

As if to compensate for the inadequacy of their products, McDonald's promote the consumption of meals as a 'fun event'. This turns the act of eating into a performance, with the 'glamour' of being in a McDonald's ('Just like it is in the ads!') reducing the food itself to the status of a prop.

Not a lot of children are interested in nutrition, and even if they were, all the gimmicks and routines with paper hats and straws and balloons hide the fact that the food they're seduced into eating is at best mediocre, at worst poisonous - and their parents know it's not even cheap.

Coco- Cola threatens Indian photographer with Lawsuit

London : The Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited, a subsidiary of the Atlanta based Coca-Cola company, has threatened Mr. Sharad Haksar, one of India's celebrated photographers, with a lawsuit.

Mr. Haksar, a leading international photographer and winner of the 2005 Cannes Silver Lion, has placed a large billboard in one of Chennai's busiest areas - one of India's largest cities - with his own "work (which) is solely an expression of creativity."

The billboard features the ubiquitous red Coca-Cola wall painting, commonly found across India. Directly preceding the Coca-Cola ad, and part of the billboard, is a dry water hand-pump, with empty vessels waiting to be filled up with water - a common scene in India, particularly in Chennai.

On July 11, 2005, the law firm of Daniel & Gladys, who represent Coca-Cola's Indian subsidiary, sent a letter to Mr. Haksar threatening him with serious legal actions unless the billboard was replaced 'unconditionally and immediately'. Coca-Cola would seek Indian Rupees 2 million (US$ 45,000) for "incalculable damage to the goodwill and reputation" of Coca-Cola, and also sought an 'unconditional apology in writing'.

Mr. Haksar said, "I have no intentions of issuing any apology. Because I have not committed anything wrong. If Coke pursues this legal course, my lawyers shall take appropriate counter action."

Mr. Haksar's billboard highlights the severe water shortages being experienced by communities that live around Coca-Cola's bottling plants across India. A community close to Chennai, in Gangaikondan, has already held large protests - protesting against an upcoming Coca-Cola plant. In the neighboring state of Kerala, in the village of Plachimada, Coca-Cola has been unable to open its bottling facility for the last 16 months - because the community will not allow it to.

Coca-Cola is in serious trouble in India. A massive rural movement has emerged to hold the company accountable for creating water shortages and polluting the remaining water and soil.

"We appreciate Mr. Haksar's efforts and we condemn Coca-Cola's attempts to silence a public discourse on the issues," said Amit Srivastava of the international campaigning organization, India Resource Center. The campaign continues to receive tremendous public support internationally and has put the Coca-Cola company on the defensive.

The recently held Live 8 concerts pulled out with negotiations with Coca-Cola over sponsorships because of public opposition, spearheaded by the India Resource Center. Coca-Cola was also banned from the Make Poverty History March as a result, on July 2, 2005, a march of close to 300,000 people in Edinburgh in Scotland.

Bangalore Bloggers Bandh rescheduled to 29th September Saturday 2005 --Rain gods save IIPM !

The rain gods rescued IIPM students from the wrath of angry bloggers this wednesday
as all school kids in bangalore were given 2 days off so that they could paddle in their tiny paper boats (made from school Text books pages ) all the
way to electronic city to attend IT.in 2005 Technology fair where they will try to generate a giant wave by splashing their tiny feet in the water
We hope this wave will be big enough to drown Mr Deve Gowda and Mr Dharam Singh
who are expected to inagurate it

Though I fear that the amount of water displaced when both Mr Dharam singh and Mr Deve Gowda drown (Archimedes Principle )will flood the whole of Karnataka

However they have my best wishes

The bandh has now been rescheduled to the 29th Saturday tentatively
There is also a possibilty it could be postponed indefinately

However as I was passing by Lalbagh
